Participation at the One-Day Global Action against Poverty/Nigeria Network of NNNGOs National People Assembly
The physical people’s assembly which was held on Thursday September, 14th 2023 was convened as a follow up to the virtual people’s assembly to commemorate the global week of action 2023. The event which served as a platform for CSO leaders and the media to contribute inputs on the current situation in light of the SDG Mid-Point with the theme “Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on the Achievement of the SDGs in Nigeria” had 20 physical participants in attendance.
During the event, recommendations and practical experiences on how to mitigate the challenges to implementation of the SDGs in Nigeria in various organizations were discussed. As one of the Participants I was able to share the programmes of Arise Youth Network for Total Impact in the areas of Youth leadership trainings, our various empowerment programmes, partnership drive with other organizations and Conferences as ways in which we are driving to meet up with the SDG goals.
Part of the key issues that emerged at the event was the lack of trust citizens have in the government, weak implementation of policies and the lack of local government autonomy.
Listing their demands, participants called on the Nigeria Government to “Focus on quality education (Provision of adequate infrastructure, subsidy for schools, upgrading technical school) with entrepreneurship practices to advance youth employment, Upgrade the PHC facilities and employment of qualified health personnel at all primary health care centres across the country”, they also encouraged CSOs to synergize with the media to consistently raise awareness on the need to accelerate action on attainment of the SDGs and use each of the SDGs to draw out a national and sub-national action plans for achieving the goals.
The Unite to Act stunt was also organized in front of an iconic second gate of University College Hospital, Ibadan where participants convened for us to create a high visibility and awareness about the SDGs.
The event was organised by the Global Call to Action against Poverty in partnership with the Nigeria Network of NGOs which Arise Youth Network for Total Impact is a member.
